Knowing God’s Will for Your Future 

“Nothing happens by accident.” “Things will work out.” We Christians have a knack for making blanket statements about the Providence of God without taking a moment to consider the implications of them. In this short paper, I hope to discuss just one of the many aspects of God’s Providence in our lives and how it impacts our understanding of the future. 

Sometimes in our day-to-day activities (things like brushing our teeth, going to work, interacting with the same people day in and day out) can seem boring, pointless, and mundane. At other times, we may find ourselves quite proud of our work. It may puff us up like a blowfish or blow us up like a balloon. What I have come to realize in the last several months is that these two extremes are both completely unhelpful and completely ungodly.  

If, on the one hand, you find yourself being bored of your work and not taking it seriously, you don’t glorify God in the way that you should in your work (1 Corinthians 10:31). You don’t recognize God’s sovereignty in it. You don’t recognize God’s providence in providing that work for you. You simply look to yourself in a grumbly expression exclaiming, “Just another day in the salt mines!”  

And if, on the other hand, you boast in your work and it becomes a source of pride and arrogance, you likewise lose vision of God’s Hand over your work; you become egocentric and you are unable to grow further. You forget that God has given you the work and that He has given you the skills to complete the work in such a fashion. You look to yourself in a smug expression exclaiming, “I nailed it again!” 

But, instead of either of these extremes, it is crucial for us to remember that God is sovereign over our everyday routines (yes, even the smallest details). If you think back to your first job, you can see God’s Hand over you there. You can see how God used that job to teach you things, to draw you closer to Him, to prepare you for what was coming next.  

In the same way, the work that He has given you now, whether it feels boring and mundane, or is a source of pride and arrogance, is not the end in and of itself. Rather, it is a means to an end. We are to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever. Sometimes God uses difficult situations and frustrating jobs to bring us closer to Him. Other times, He may bless us and gift us in a certain area that makes us thrive. Whatever the case may be, we must give all the glory unto God who ordains our locations and positions and seek to enjoy Him in forever.  

A pastor years ago once said, “Don’t waste your wait.” What he meant by that then still holds true today; that we must keep pushing forward, keep praying, keep reading, keep studying the Scriptures, keep reflecting on these things, and keep seeking to conform to God right now. God has given you this time. He has given you this job. He has given you these people.  

Where is He taking you with all of this? I don’t have the answer for that, but I can assure you that He is preparing you for the next stage, He is teaching you the words to speak, training you for the persecution you may face, strengthening you for leading, humbling you for following, molding you in conformity to His Son.  

Brothers and sisters, don’t waste your wait. Seek the Lord in all circumstances. Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Have faith in Him that He has a purpose for the work you are currently doing. Glorify the Lord and enjoy Him forever.
