Review: The Gospel Call and True Conversion by Paul Wahser

Gospel Assurance and Warnings by Paul Washer

  1. Book info

  • P. #: 252, Volume 3 of the series, Recovering the Gospel

  1.  Author: Paul Washer

  • Life: Born in Madrid, Spain on September 11, 1969. He studied engineering at the University of Texas and earned his Master of Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. After being saved in college, Washer spent a lot of time praying, reading the Scriptures, and sharing the gospel. He later spent 10 years in Peru as a missionary only to come back to America in the year 2000 to found the Missionary Organization, HeartCry, which supports dozens of missionaries worldwide. Washer believes in Reformed theology which of course stresses the providence of God, the holiness of God, and Biblical authority above all else.

  • General info about author: Paul Washer is a preacher, theologian, missionary, commentator, puritan enthusiast, author, husband, and father of 4.

  1.  Overall Summary/review:

  •  The book (and series) is a wonderful introduction to theology and a great selection for someone who isn’t familiar with the Reformed Tradition or the gospel at all.

  • As the title suggests discusses what it means to have assurance in our faith; to know for certain that we are actually saved. Washer also offers us warnings about assuming that we are saved without any reason to assume that we are. (p. 3)

  • He discusses the fruit of the Spirit and how we as Christians ought to display them. This is how we know if we are truly saved. He also offers 12 “tests” to know if we are saved (p. 152-153)

  • Like the other two volumes in this series, he addresses many different doctrines of modern evangelicalism such as the sinners prayer, and what Matthew Everhard would call Worshiptainment, and others. He brings our attention back to the Word of God in a Biblical and painful exhortation.

  • The only negative about this book and the entire series, is that there is no index in the back for anything. The whole thing is made up of footnotes. Not my favorite.

  •  This book is split into two parts which follow the title of the book. These two sections are further broken down into 19 chapters. The sections are each on a passage of Scripture, and each chapter break these passages down like sermons.

  •  Section 1 breaks down 2 Corinthians 13:5. Section 2 breaks down James 2:19 and Matthew 7:13-14.

  • Quotes: p. 4, 7, 11, 50, 55, 73, 85, 92, 119, 136, 170, 209, 223, end with 103
