  1.  Author: Alun Ebenezer (born in 1975)

  • Life: He has over twenty years of experience in education, which includes his role as headmaster and senior leadership positions in various schools. He holds an MA in Education Leadership. He also takes stances on contemporary issues such as the issues in the education system. One such issue, is that of white supremacy stating that it is not good to teach such things in schools. This has caused much controversy. Ebenezer was born in Wales, but now resides in London.

  1.  Overall Summary/review:

  • Of course, this book is for young men, but there couldn’t be a better way to begin our series on manhood. These are the fundamentals.

  • Written specifically for new readers, the chapters are very short. I like how accessible this is.

  • It was written to be read as a devotional over the course of a month. It’s short and sweet, and yet deals with the requirements for manhood. As the back of the book says, “A book for young men. Real men. Christian men.” Also, first paragraph of introduction.

  • One helpful thing is the inclusion of his appendix. It’s a great place to start for new readers. There are two negatives I see with this. First, I wouldn’t recommend all the books on this list (which doesn’t mean they aren’t worth reading, I just wouldn’t start with some of them). Second, each year is very short. He does say not to limit yourself to the list, which is good, but I feel like you could push young men to read more. As he himself says on page 44, “It is vital that young Christian men read.”

  •  Quotes: 13, 14, 15, 21, 36, 40, 46, 49, 51, 57, 58, 63, 84, 90, 101, 106

“Our fundamental problem is not bad parents, bad schools, bad friends, bad circumstances, or bad politicians. Our biggest problem is not “out there,” but inside of us (Mark 7:20-23). The heart of our problem is the problem of the heart.” - Alun Ebenezer, Call to Action, p. 13

“Sin feels so good at the time, but it ruins lives, divides families, and causes untold pain.” - Alun Ebenezer, Call to Action, p. 15

“The evidence that you really trust God is that you trust Him in, and for, everything. You trust Him to guide you through life, in the good times and the bad.” - Alun Ebenezer, Call to Action, p. 36

“The more we get to know Him and commune with Him, the more we will become like Him.” - Alun Ebenezer, Call to Action, p. 40

“I urge you, young men, to devote yourselves to prayer and truly grapple with God through it.” - Alun Ebenezer, Call to Action, p. 51
